During the on-site phase of the HI-EURECA-PRO Hackathon on Industrial Heritage, each international team was given a real building in Gliwice's former wire factory and asked to design its "second life", a new, socially useful function grounded in sustainable development and SDG 12 (responsible consumption and production), balancing technical, environmental, social and economic aspects. Below you can download the four teams' final presentations and explore their proposals for the future of post-industrial space.

GliwiTech — From Industrial Heritage to Europe's Digital Future
A redevelopment of the former factory into a sustainable "heritage hub" that pairs a start-up and innovation centre with an on-site data centre, a green roof and energy-smart design, linking industrial heritage to Europe's digital future.

The Wire — Connecting Generations in a Former Wire Factory

The Industrial Thread — Revitalizing Heritage Through Circular Culture
An adaptive reuse of the brick factory into a sequential museum, flexible community hangar and social café that celebrates Silesian craft and identity through a circular-culture approach.

The presentations and lecture recordings collected here come from the first two days of the on-site phase of the HI-EURECA-PRO Hackathon on Industrial Heritage. During this part of the programme, participants had the opportunity to attend inspiring lectures delivered by researchers from the Silesian University of Technology, the Medical University of Silesia, the University of Bielsko-Biala, and the University of León. Together, the talks set out the ideas that framed the participants' work: from making the protection of cultural and industrial heritage more sustainable, to giving post-industrial places new life through revitalisation and adaptive reuse. They touch on themes such as sustainable development and life-cycle thinking, the role of green spaces and healthy living environments, traditional and modern construction materials and their environmental implications, the reuse of post-industrial landscapes, and the cultural identity of the region. Below, we also provide short notes introducing the lecturers.

Dr. María Fernández Raga is a Full Professor in Applied Physics at the University of León, Spain, and a highly recognized researcher specializing in environmental sciences, data acquisition, and heritage conservation. An expert in protecting historical structures from weathering and environmental degradation, she has led several major initiatives in cultural and industrial heritage , holds an international patent with European extension on the treatment of limestone monument erosion , and acts as the Principal Investigator and coordinator for high-profile European and national projects.
Notably, she is the leader of NANOSHIELD (and its successor NANOSHIELD 2.0), a highly successful, multi-award-winning multidisciplinary research team and project focused on shielding stone-based cultural heritage using sustainable nanomaterials. Her extensive background includes directing consolidated research units , holding international patents , and receiving renowned honors such as the Spanish Royal Academy of Engineering's National Research Medal. Bringing together extensive experience in managing diverse academic networks and deep technical expertise in heritage preservation Dr. Fernández Raga offer invaluable mentorship, strategic vision, and technical guidance to the participants of the Hackathon on Industrial Heritage at the Silesian University of Technology.

Anna Lempart-Rapacewicz, PhD, DSc in Engineering and Technology, is an environmental engineering specialist in the University of Bielsko-Biała, with expertise in water and wastewater management, water quality and treatment, and the design of sanitary infrastructure. She combines academic and teaching activities with engineering practice, participating in projects in the fields of construction and environmental engineering.
She holds professional licenses for both design and construction site management in two disciplines: structural engineering and installation engineering, including water supply, sewage, heating, ventilation, and gas networks, installations, and systems. In her professional practice, she serves as a designer, construction site manager, and construction works manager.

Katarzyna Brukało, Associate Professor, PhD, MBA in healthcare, clinical dietitian and public health specialist, Department of Health Policy, Faculty of Public Health, Medical University of Silesia, Poland. She serves as an expert for the European Federation of the Associations of Dietitians within the European Specialist Dietetic Networks for Older Adults and Public Health and the International Group of Urban Planning for Health Equity under the Academy of Territorial Development in the Leibniz Association. Dr. Brukało has actively contributed to numerous international projects supported by the Ministry of Health, the World Health Organization, and the European Commission. She served as researcher and coordinator in projects such as JANPA, JAHEE, EPHOs, Best Re-MaP, Com.HeNet, PEN, FoodPath, StratKIT+, Health4EUkids and JA PreventNCD.

Doctor Eryk Goldmann is an assistant researcher at the Silesian University of Technology. His doctoral dissertation focused on a comprehensive assessment of the influence of carbon nanotubes on properties of innovative functional cement nanocomposites. His research interests include functional building materials, waste valorization in construction materials, biomimetics and innovations in construction materials. He is currently involved in a prestigious OPUS project at Wrocław University of Science and Technology focusing on concrete composites with graphene oxide and industrial wastes.
